New Traffic Fine Reforms Make Roads Safer in Tamil Nadu

New traffic fine reforms in Tamil Nadu have changed the way people approach road safety and compliance. These changes, effective from March 1, 2025, bring in stricter fines and clearer enforcement to reduce the increasing number of accidents, violations, and unsafe practices on the roads. With more people migrating to cities, rapid urbanization, and growing vehicle ownership, the government has decided to introduce a revised penalty structure to encourage responsible driving and riding habits.

The new traffic fine system is designed to target specific behaviours that lead to the majority of road mishaps in the state. Offences like drunk driving, riding without helmets, and ignoring seat belt rules now attract heavy fines and even suspension of licences. Driving without proper insurance or using a mobile phone while driving can also result in higher penalties than before.

Stricter Penalties Aim to Reduce Road Violations and Accidents

If caught driving under the influence of alcohol, drivers may now face a fine of up to ₹10,000 and imprisonment for up to 6 months. Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet doesn’t just attract a ₹1,000 fine, but may also lead to the rider’s licence being cancelled for three months. Similarly, driving without wearing a seatbelt now carries a fine of ₹1,000.

The use of mobile phones while driving has become one of the leading causes of distraction and accidents. To tackle this, the penalty has been increased from ₹500 to ₹5,000. This alone signals how seriously the state is treating driver negligence due to phone usage.

One of the most important changes in the new traffic fine system is related to driving without a valid insurance policy. This offence now attracts a fine ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000. Not having proper insurance not only violates motor vehicle rules but also puts other road users at risk in the event of an accident.

Another sharp increase is seen in the fine for driving without a valid PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate. What was once ₹1,000 can now go up to ₹10,000, along with imprisonment or mandatory community service.

In an effort to discourage dangerous driving, the fine has been revised from ₹500 to ₹5,000. Blocking the path of emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks, which was earlier fined at ₹1,000, will now attract a penalty of ₹10,000.

Overspeeding, a frequent cause of highway accidents, has also been targeted with a raised fine of ₹5,000 from the earlier ₹500. Those jumping traffic signals will now face a similar ₹5,000 fine. For minors involved in any traffic violation, the consequences are extremely strict. The penalty has been set at ₹25,000, and it may also include up to 3 years of imprisonment, cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for 1 year, and a ban on getting a driving licence until the offender turns 25.

What Drivers and Riders Must Follow Starting March 2025

Tamil Nadu has also made it easy to check and pay traffic fines online. Vehicle owners can visit the ACKO website or download the Parivahan app, enter their vehicle registration number, and instantly fetch details of any pending challans. This helps in staying updated with one’s compliance status and prevents unnecessary complications.

The new traffic fine regulations apply to all types of vehicles and users—two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and even pedestrians to some extent. For car drivers, rules like wearing seatbelts, avoiding speeding, and never driving under the influence are now enforced more strictly. Two-wheeler riders must wear helmets, avoid triple riding, and maintain proper documentation like insurance and licence to avoid hefty fines.
