New Revelation in the Meghalaya Murder Twist Shows Plan to Burn an Unknown Woman’s Body as Sonam’s

The Meghalaya murder twist has taken a sinister turn. Police have now confirmed that the accused not only plotted the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi but also considered burning the body of an unidentified woman to pass it off as that of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. The intention behind this disturbing plan was to create confusion among investigators and allow Sonam to stay hidden for longer without raising suspicion.

Police Confirm Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raj Kushwaha Orchestrated the Murder and Backup Plans in Indore Months Before the Crime

Meghalaya Police Superintendent Vivek Syiem revealed that Raj Kushwaha masterminded the murder with Sonam as his co-conspirator. The plot was not hastily executed. It began as early as February 2025 in Indore, nearly three months before Sonam’s wedding to Raja. Multiple alternatives were considered, including faking Sonam’s death in various ways—like pretending she drowned or using a burnt body to impersonate her. This level of preparation indicates a high degree of premeditation and manipulation.

A Timeline of the Murder: From Honeymoon Travel to Execution of a Cold-Blooded Plot in Sohra

The murder plan unfolded across states. After marrying Raja on May 11 in Indore, Sonam and her husband left for what was supposed to be a honeymoon tour to the northeast, including Assam and Meghalaya. The accused had already reached Assam ahead of the couple, attempting to execute the murder in Guwahati. When those attempts failed, they regrouped in Shillong and lured Raja to Weisawdong Falls in Sohra. On May 23, he was brutally attacked with a machete by the conspirators in a parking lot while Sonam watched, and then his body was dumped in a deep gorge.

Raja Raghuvanshi murder case

The Group Had Multiple Escape Strategies, Including a Fake Abduction and Travel in Disguise Using a Burqa

The killers left nothing to chance. After Raja was murdered, one of the accomplices wore a raincoat given by Sonam to cover up bloodstains. The raincoat was later discarded. Meanwhile, Sonam wore a burqa—provided through an accomplice—and left Shillong to begin her journey across multiple cities to mislead authorities. She travelled through Guwahati, Siliguri, Patna, Ara, and Lucknow before reaching Indore. During this time, Raj instructed her to fake an abduction and reappear after a few days. When one of the accomplices was arrested, panic set in, and Sonam called her family pretending she had escaped kidnappers. She finally surrendered in Ghazipur on June 9.

Investigators Say Accomplices Were Close Friends and Relatives of the Mastermind Who Executed the Killing Together

The Meghalaya police identified all four accused, including Raj Kushwaha, as individuals closely linked to Sonam and Raj. One of them is Raj’s cousin, while the others are friends who helped plan and carry out the murder. None were professional criminals, but their loyalty to Raj appears to have been a strong enough motive. Police confirmed that the group stayed in contact throughout and coordinated every step, from the murder to the disposal of evidence and the false narratives crafted to mislead law enforcement.

Forensic Evidence and Eyewitness Reports Helped Police Unravel the Full Extent of the Murder Conspiracy

As more facts emerged, forensic experts retrieved crucial evidence such as the bloodied raincoat and scooter used in the escape. A local tour guide also gave a statement confirming he saw the group together. Police believe these key elements helped connect the dots. Combined with Sonam’s contradictory statements and suspicious travel history, the authorities reconstructed the sequence of events that confirmed her role in the crime. A scene reconstruction involving all accused is now planned to strengthen the charges against them.

Investigators Believe Sonam May Have Used Raj Kushwaha as a Pawn in a Larger Manipulative Plan

Police sources now suggest that while Raj Kushwaha was the primary executor of the plan, he might not have been the only romantic interest in Sonam’s life. Some reports indicate that Sonam could have been manipulating Raj to eliminate her husband while planning a different future altogether. She allegedly used emotional pressure and false promises to involve him in the murder. Whether Raj was fully aware of her true intentions remains under investigation, but the theory adds another shocking layer to the Meghalaya murder twist.

A Chargesheet Is Expected Soon As Police Reconstruct the Crime Scene to Finalise the Investigation

With all five accused now in custody, the Meghalaya Police plan to reconstruct the crime scene at Weisawdong Falls in the coming days. This will help them establish the precise timeline and criminal roles of each participant. Authorities have 90 days to file the chargesheet, and they aim to do so well within the deadline. Meanwhile, financial trails are also being examined, especially around the ₹9 lakh reportedly spent by Sonam in the days following the murder.
