Tragic Helicopter Crash in Kedarnath: Aryan Aviation Operations Suspended Amid Heightened Safety Scrutiny: 15 June 2025

Breaking News

Uttrakhand: A tragic helicopter crash accident involving Aryan Aviation’s Bell 407 aircraft (Registration No. VT-BKA) occurred early this morning near Gaurikund in the Kedarnath sector of Uttarakhand. The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the nation, took place during a scheduled Char Dham Yatra flight. The crash has prompted immediate suspension of Aryan Aviation’s services, strict disciplinary actions, and an intensified review of aviation safety protocols in the region.

Incident Details:

The helicopter took off from the Aryan Helipad at Guptkashi at 05:10 hrs and landed at Shri Kedarnath Ji Helipad at 05:18 hrs. It departed just a minute later at 05:19 hrs, returning to Guptkashi with five passengers, one infant, and one crew member onboard. The aircraft reportedly crashed near Gaurikund between 05:30 and 05:45 hrs under adverse weather conditions.

Initial assessments suggest that the probable cause of the crash may be Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) — a scenario in which an airworthy aircraft, under the control of the pilot, unintentionally flies into terrain, often due to low visibility or misjudgment of altitude. In this case, poor visibility and dense cloud cover in the valley entry area appear to have played a significant role.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been tasked with conducting a detailed investigation into the incident. While conclusive findings are awaited, authorities have taken immediate precautionary and disciplinary measures.

Rescue and Emergency Response:

Following the accident, rescue operations were launched immediately by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. These teams have reached the crash site and are working round-the-clock to assess casualties and assist in the recovery operation. The harsh terrain and challenging weather conditions have posed hurdles to rescue efforts, but authorities are committed to ensuring swift action.

Government Response:

A high-level emergency meeting was convened by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at 11:00 hrs, which included senior government officials, the Secretary (Civil Aviation), representatives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and other concerned agencies. The meeting reviewed immediate safety and operational concerns surrounding helicopter services in the Kedarnath region.

Major Decisions Taken:

In response to the tragedy, the following significant measures have been announced:

  1. Immediate Suspension of Aryan Aviation’s Operations:
All operations of Aryan Aviation under the Char Dham Yatra service have been suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the AAIB investigation and further safety audits.

  2. Pilot License Suspensions:
Two helicopters operated by TransBharat Aviation, VT-TBC (Capt. Yogesh Grewal) and VT-TBF (Capt. Jitender Harjai), were reported to have been flying under similarly unsuitable weather conditions. Consequently, the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months as a precautionary and disciplinary measure.

  3. Complete Suspension of Helicopter Services on 15th and 16th June:
As a matter of public safety and risk mitigation, all charter and shuttle helicopter operations in the Kedarnath region have been suspended for the next 48 hours.

  4. Comprehensive Safety Review by UCADA:
The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) has been directed to conduct a thorough review with all aviation operators and pilots to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols before services can resume.

  5. Establishment of Command-and-Control Room:
UCADA will also establish a dedicated Command-and-Control Room to monitor real-time aviation operations in the region and ensure that any deviation or risk factor is addressed promptly and escalated to the appropriate authorities.

  6. On-ground Oversight by DGCA Officers:
The DGCA has been ordered to post officers from Airworthiness, Safety, and Operations divisions to closely monitor all helicopter activity in the Kedarnath valley. These officers will also oversee the functioning of the new Command-and-Control Room.

Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Strong Stand:

In the wake of the crash, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has reiterated that aviation safety is non-negotiable. It emphasized that no operator is permitted to conduct flights in violation of weather guidelines or safety protocols. The DGCA has been given strict orders to enforce existing aviation norms stringently and ensure that the highest levels of discipline and accountability are maintained in flight operations — particularly in difficult terrains such as Kedarnath.

In a statement, the Ministry said, “The sanctity of human life must be upheld at all costs. Operators who compromise safety must face immediate and firm action.”

Conclusion of Helicopter Crash:

This unfortunate tragedy has cast a dark shadow over the sacred Char Dham Yatra. As pilgrims and their families seek spiritual solace in the high Himalayas, it is imperative that their journey is safeguarded by the highest standards of aviation discipline and preparedness. The crash near Gaurikund is a somber reminder of the unpredictable challenges of flying in mountainous terrain and the critical importance of strictly following all aviation norms.

The government’s swift response, coupled with decisive action against non-compliance, reflects a broader commitment to public safety and regulatory oversight. As investigations continue and services remain suspended, the thoughts of the nation are with the victims and their families.

The incident underscores the urgent need to balance spiritual devotion with technological prudence and regulatory vigilance — to ensure that future pilgrims may fly in safety and return with only memories of faith, not fear.
