New Delhi, 24 June 2025: Under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), the Central Government has taken a significant step to strengthen farmer welfare by approving the procurement of Moong and Urad in Madhya Pradesh and Urad in Uttar Pradesh. The announcement was made following a high-level virtual meeting chaired by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Approval for Procurement under Price Support Scheme
The decision came after Madhya Pradesh submitted a formal proposal seeking procurement of summer lentils. Shri Chouhan approved the procurement of Moong and Urad in Madhya Pradesh, and Urad in Uttar Pradesh, aligning with the Centre’s ongoing efforts to protect the interests of farmers and ensure fair returns for their produce.
He reiterated the government’s resolve, stating:
“Although this will pose a financial burden, we are committed to our farmers. A transparent and effective procurement process is essential to deliver real benefits to them.”
Emphasis on Transparency and Technology
Shri Chouhan instructed officials from NAFED, NCCF, and state governments to ensure the use of modern technology for accurate registration of farmers. He stressed that a transparent procurement process will not only reduce the influence of middlemen but also guarantee direct benefit transfer to the actual producers.
He further stated:
“Efforts must be made to prevent irregularities in storage. Only a transparent process can truly empower farmers.”
Increase in Procurement Centers and Vigilance Against Irregularities
To facilitate a smoother procurement process, the minister directed that the number of procurement centers may be increased if needed. Additionally, he emphasized the need for strict vigilance against storage-related complaints, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring a corruption-free and efficient system.
Meeting with State Agriculture Ministers
The meeting was attended by:
- Shri Aidal Singh Kansana, MP Minister for Farmers’ Welfare and Agriculture Development
- Shri Surya Pratap Shahi, UP Agriculture Minister
- Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Union Agriculture Secretary
- Senior officials from NAFED, NCCF, and relevant state departments
During the meeting, strategies for logistics, storage, and farmer outreach were discussed in detail.
Farmer Welfare a Top Priority
Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan reaffirmed that ensuring fair remuneration for farmers remains one of the top priorities of the central government. He assured full cooperation to state governments and emphasized that direct procurement mechanisms will be strengthened further to eliminate exploitation.
