Pune : In a major step toward strengthening urban mobility in Maharashtra, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project on 25 June 2025. This phase will include two elevated corridors:
-
Corridor 2A: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk
-
Corridor 2B: Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi
Announced as an extension of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Pune Metro Phase-1, the Phase-2 expansion is scheduled for completion within four years by 2029, with pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy having already commenced in early 2025. These new corridors are strategically designed to ease travel across Pune’s rapidly growing eastern and western suburbs, including key zones like Kothrud, Kharadi, Bavdhan, and Wagholi, thereby enhancing urban connectivity and reducing congestion on arterial routes.
Key Highlights of the Pune Metro Phase-2 Project
-
Total Length: 12.75 km
-
Corridors: 2 (Corridor 2A and 2B)
-
Metro Stations: 13
-
Project Cost: ₹3,626.24 crore
-
Project Duration: 4 years
-
Funding Model: Cost will be equally shared by
-
Government of India
-
Government of Maharashtra
-
External bilateral/multilateral agencies
-
This strategic expansion aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) of Pune, which envisions a seamless East–West Metro corridor from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi, offering better integration across modes and regions.
Connecting Pune’s Growth Nodes
The corridors will pass through some of Pune’s busiest and fastest-developing localities, including:
-
Chandani Chowk
-
Bavdhan
-
Kothrud
-
Kharadi
-
Wagholi
These areas are home to IT hubs, business zones, educational institutions, and large residential neighborhoods. With improved connectivity, these extensions are expected to increase the share of public transport and significantly boost ridership on the Pune Metro network.
Seamless Integration with Existing Metro Lines
The two new corridors will interconnect with the rest of Pune’s metro network through the District Court Interchange Station, where they will seamlessly link with:
-
Line 1 (Nigdi–Katraj)
-
Line 3 (Hinjewadi–District Court)
This multimodal integration will ensure faster and more efficient movement across the city, minimizing travel time and enhancing convenience for daily commuters.
Intercity Integration and Traffic Decongestion
The Metro expansion also includes provisions for integrating intercity bus services:
-
Chandani Chowk: Will serve as an access point for buses from Mumbai and Bengaluru
-
Wagholi: Will be a hub for buses from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar
This intermodal coordination will allow passengers to switch seamlessly from intercity buses to Pune’s metro network, reducing dependence on private vehicles and contributing to traffic decongestion on major roads such as Paud Road and Nagar Road.
Ridership Projections and Urban Impact
The Pune Metro Phase-2 project is expected to drive significant ridership growth on Line 2, with daily passenger estimates as follows:
-
2027: 0.96 lakh
-
2037: 2.01 lakh
-
2047: 2.87 lakh
-
2057: 3.49 lakh
This upward trend reflects the potential of the project to transform urban transit, reduce road congestion, cut pollution, and promote sustainable transportation.
Implementation and Pre-Construction Status
The project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). The agency will oversee all aspects of development including:
-
Civil Works
-
Electro-mechanical Installations
-
Station Infrastructure
-
Safety and Signaling Systems
Pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy have already begun, marking a proactive approach to timely project completion.
Unlocking Economic and Social Development
The approval of Pune Metro Phase-2 marks a strategic investment in urban infrastructure, with wide-reaching benefits:
-
Increased economic activity across connected zones
-
Improved access to employment, education, and services
-
Boost to property values along metro corridors
-
Reduction in urban pollution and carbon emissions
-
Support for Pune’s Smart City goals and Vision 2047
This initiative reaffirms the government’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready urban transport, setting a model for other metropolitan regions across India.
