Indian Navy Celebrates 100th Indigenous Warship with ‘Nation Building Through Shipbuilding’ Seminar

Breaking News

New Delhi, July 22, 2025 — In a significant step towards strengthening India’s maritime capabilities and industrial self-reliance, the Indian Navy will host a one-day seminar titled “Nation Building Through Shipbuilding” on July 23, 2025, at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. The event marks the historic delivery of the 100th indigenously designed warship, a milestone achieved by the Navy and its Warship Design Bureau (WDB).

Celebrating Six Decades of Indigenous Excellence

The seminar is being organized by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB), the Navy’s in-house warship design authority. Established in 1964 as the Central Design Office, and renamed the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) in 1970, the WDB has played a pivotal role in India’s journey towards naval self-reliance. Over the last 60 years, it has contributed to the design of 20 classes of warships, from Seaward Defence Boats to Aircraft Carriers.

100th Warship Delivered: A National Achievement

The recent delivery of Y12652 (INS Udaygiri) on July 1, 2025, marks the 100th warship designed and delivered indigenously, a significant national achievement in the “Make in India” defence initiative. This milestone highlights India’s growing technological expertise and industrial capability in shipbuilding.

Bringing Together National Stakeholders

The seminar will bring together key representatives from:

  • The Government of India

  • The Indian Navy

  • Public and private shipyards

  • Industrial leaders and MSMEs

  • Classification societies

  • Academic and research institutions

The aim is to facilitate constructive and future-forward discussions on policy, innovation, and industrial challenges in Indian shipbuilding.

Driving Self-Reliance and Economic Growth

The warship building program is a cornerstone of India’s defence modernization and economic resilience. The sector has enabled:

  • Indigenous design and production capabilities

  • Employment generation across multiple sectors

  • Growth of MSMEs and the defence industrial ecosystem

  • Technology transfer and innovation

  • Strategic maritime preparedness

Shipbuilding, thus, not only secures India’s defence interests but also contributes to the larger goal of nation building through industrial empowerment and strategic autonomy.

Exploring Future Technologies and Global Standards

Participants will also explore futuristic technologies being implemented globally in shipbuilding, and assess how India can integrate such advancements to meet global benchmarks. The seminar will help identify key enablers, gaps, and opportunities in delivering high-quality naval platforms.

Conclusion

With a strong focus on self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) and strategic capability building, the seminar reflects India’s unwavering commitment to becoming a global maritime power. The Indian Navy’s continued collaboration with Indian industry and academia ensures a bright, self-sustained future for the country’s defence and shipbuilding ecosystem.
