Bihar Gangsters Used Disguises, Hotel-Hopping in Kolkata to Evade Arrest

Breaking News

Bihar Gangsters Used Disguises — In a dramatic turn of events that reveals the deepening nexus between organized crime in Bihar and urban shelters in Bengal, Kolkata Police and Bengal STF have jointly apprehended a gang of fugitives wanted for the broad-daylight killing of gangster Chandan Mishra at Patna’s Paras HMRI Hospital. The fugitives, hailing from Bihar, had been hiding across Kolkata’s high-end hotels, relying on disguises, digital evasive techniques, and local support to avoid detection.

Among the five arrested were Tausif Raza alias Badshah, the main accused in the Patna murder, his cousin Nishu Khan, and three accomplices, including a woman who aided in booking accommodations in the city.

The Escape Plan: A Digital Trail of Cunning Moves

Upon committing the murder in Patna on July 17, the accused used a pre-planned route to flee the state. Intelligence inputs indicated that the gang entered West Bengal through a circuitous route using multiple vehicles and burner mobile phones. They first checked into a New Town property, then moved to a hotel in Park Circus before finally settling at a guest house in Anandapur.

To mask their identities, Tausif Raza reportedly summoned an app-based barber service to trim his hair and beard, effectively changing his appearance. The woman arrested with them posed as a family member to avoid suspicion when booking hotel rooms.

The group moved frequently between properties, often staying only a few hours at each, and used food delivery apps and ride-hailing services with dummy accounts to minimize location tracking.

STF Tracks the Hunt: Vehicles, CCTVs & Hotel Logs

A breakthrough came when the Bihar STF, working with Bengal intelligence officials, traced a suspicious SUV used by the gang through a trail of toll booth payments and CCTV footage. From New Town’s Sukhobrishti area to Park Circus and then to Anandapur, the vehicle was flagged multiple times.

Security footage retrieved from the hotel lobbies, local shops, and apartment complexes provided the crucial identification data. Hotel logs revealed that the bookings were made using false identities, with Aadhaar copies submitted under different names.

Police officials say their final hideout — a guest house in Anandapur — was chosen due to its relative seclusion and lack of heavy surveillance. Acting on the tip-off, the STF conducted a swift raid in the early hours of July 18. The gang surrendered without resistance, confirming that their weapons had been dumped along the way.

Bihar Gangsters Used Disguises- Chandan Mishra’s Killing and Its Wider Ramifications

The killing of Chandan Mishra in Patna’s hospital ICU sent shockwaves across Bihar. Mishra, linked to a rival gang, was allegedly gunned down by assailants disguised as hospital visitors. His murder signaled a new level of audacity by Bihar’s gang networks — one where even hospitals no longer served as neutral ground.

The incident raised pressing questions about the security failures in medical facilities and the operational reach of gangs like that of Tausif Raza. Raza, who is suspected to have ties with cross-border arms dealers and urban syndicates in Bengal, had evaded arrest for nearly two years despite being under constant police scrutiny.

Kolkata’s Shadow Network: Subletting, Local Links, and Safe Havens

The incident has exposed serious gaps in Kolkata’s urban monitoring. Several guest houses and flats across New Town and Eastern Metropolitan Bypass are now under the scanner for renting rooms without proper police verification. Locals have voiced concern over the ease with which fugitives find shelter within city limits, aided by digital platforms and lax tenant screening procedures.

Anandapur and Topsia, areas known for rapid construction and loosely regulated guest housing, are now being patrolled more stringently. Law enforcement authorities are planning to implement stricter KYC norms and conduct background checks for both domestic and international visitors in budget hotels and PG accommodations.

Transit and Custody: Legal Developments

After their arrest, the five accused were produced before a Kolkata court. Tausif and Nishu were handed over to Bihar police under transit remand for further interrogation in Patna. The woman and two other aides remain in judicial custody in Kolkata as the local police investigate their involvement in sheltering fugitives and falsifying documents.

No arms were found during the arrest, though statements given by the accused point to the weapons being disposed of along the Bihar–Bengal highway. Bihar STF is conducting combing operations across the Patna outskirts based on the leads obtained.

Growing Bihar-Bengal Crime Nexus: A Wake-Up Call

This incident underlines a growing concern — Kolkata is increasingly being used as a safe corridor for gangsters from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The city’s vast, under-regulated guesthouse market and the anonymity offered by digital tools like app-based rentals and ride services have created loopholes for such fugitives to exploit.

Recent arrests, including the Topsia arms racket bust in June 2025, suggest that gang lords are also using Kolkata to route illicit arms, drugs, and cash across eastern India. Police are now developing a unified crime tracking system that will link local surveillance networks with state-level crime records and facial recognition systems.

What’s Next: Policy Overhaul and Preventive Strategy

Officials from the Kolkata Police, in consultation with the West Bengal Home Department, have proposed the following immediate steps:

  • Mandatory police verification for all guest house bookings beyond 2 days

  • Hotel association meetings to sensitize staff on red flags and criminal behavior

  • Geo-fencing alerts for high-crime suspects entering metro zones

  • Interlinking of inter-state vehicle tracking for suspects on the run

Citizens, meanwhile, are being urged to report unusual activity in their neighborhoods and ensure that local tenants and PG residents are verified through police e-verification portals.
