London/New Delhi — In a landmark development aimed at shaping the next decade of India-UK relations, both nations have officially endorsed the India-UK Vision 2035, a comprehensive strategic roadmap designed to foster collaboration across critical domains, including trade, technology, education, defence, and climate change.
A Future-Oriented Economic Alliance
At the heart of Vision 2035 is a deepened economic partnership. The roadmap outlines enhanced bilateral trade, innovation-led investments, and smoother regulatory cooperation. The goal is to not only double trade volumes by 2030 but also to strengthen resilience in global supply chains and digital infrastructure.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), currently under advanced negotiation, targeting a conclusion within the current fiscal year. The agreement aims to remove market access barriers, simplify customs procedures, and incentivize SME participation in cross-border commerce.
Innovation and Technology for Global Good
Acknowledging the transformative potential of technology, the Vision 2035 agreement emphasizes responsible AI, cybersecurity, and semiconductor cooperation. A dedicated India-UK Emerging Technologies Forum will be set up to coordinate joint research and safeguard critical tech ecosystems.
The two sides also agreed to foster collaboration between premier institutions like IITs, Oxford, and Imperial College, especially in AI for health, sustainable mobility, and climate solutions.
Defence and Strategic Cooperation
Under the 2035 vision, defence ties are set to deepen through joint military exercises, maritime security operations in the Indo-Pacific, and technology transfer programs. The roadmap highlights collaboration in jet engine technology, drone systems, and counter-terrorism intelligence.
The UK will join India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, reinforcing a free, open, and rules-based maritime order in the region. A defence industrial dialogue is also planned for early 2026.
Green Growth and Climate Finance
Sustainability is a core pillar of Vision 2035. The UK committed to supporting India’s energy transition goals with climate finance, green hydrogen R&D, and knowledge-sharing on climate-resilient infrastructure.
Both countries pledged to uphold the Paris Agreement, promote biodiversity conservation, and strengthen collaboration through platforms like the International Solar Alliance and Global Bioenergy Partnership.
People-to-People Ties and Education
Education and mobility are set to flourish under Vision 2035. A renewed Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) will expand student exchanges, youth mobility schemes, and recognition of professional qualifications.
The UK-India Education & Research Initiative (UKIERI) will see renewed funding with a focus on future skills like quantum computing, fintech, and sustainable design.
Conclusion: A Model Bilateral Relationship for a Multipolar World
The India-UK Vision 2035 represents more than a policy roadmap—it is a statement of shared democratic values and ambitions. As the global order evolves, this partnership is poised to act as a stabilizing force, combining India’s growing strategic weight with the UK’s innovation and global reach. Both nations envision a future where collaboration—not competition—shapes prosperity and peace.
