Kolkata Weather Update August: The city continues to experience a spell of steady monsoon showers coupled with lingering humidity, as intermittent rains since early morning provided much-needed respite from the sweltering conditions earlier this month. While the rainfall cooled surface temperatures marginally, the humidity levels remained stubbornly high, creating a sticky atmosphere that residents have been grappling with throughout the week.
Morning Showers and Grey Skies
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata witnessed light to moderate rain showers starting before dawn. Cloud cover persisted through the day, with temperatures ranging between 26°C and 30°C. Though the rain kept the scorching sun at bay, high moisture levels in the air meant that people stepping outside still felt the mugginess typical of the monsoon season.
Localities such as Alipore, Tollygunge, Dum Dum, Salt Lake, Behala, and Park Street reported steady drizzles in the morning, followed by heavier bursts in some pockets. For office commuters, the damp weather meant extra caution on slippery roads, while pedestrians navigated puddle-filled lanes and uneven pavements.
Weather Department’s Forecast
IMD’s Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre indicated that Kolkata is likely to experience similar weather patterns for the next 48 hours. The ongoing monsoon trough, currently active over the Gangetic plains, has been drawing in moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.
“We are observing sustained monsoon activity over south Bengal, with Kolkata receiving scattered rainfall. This pattern is expected to continue, with heavy showers possible in isolated areas, especially during the afternoon and evening,” said an IMD official.
Humidity levels are expected to stay in the 75%–90% range, which could make the evenings feel warmer than they actually are.
Kolkata Weather Update August: Impact on Daily Life
While the rains brought some relief from heat stress, they also caused waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Kankurgachi, Lake Gardens, and parts of North Kolkata. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) deployed pumps in waterlogged stretches to clear accumulated rainwater.
Public transport faced minor delays during morning hours. Kolkata Metro services remained operational, but several bus routes reported slow-moving traffic due to slippery roads and visibility issues. Ride-hailing service providers also reported longer wait times during peak hours.
Street food vendors in Gariahat and College Street reported mixed business, as the rain deterred some customers while attracting others in search of hot snacks and tea.
Health Precautions in Humid Conditions
Doctors at several city hospitals have cautioned residents against ignoring the health implications of prolonged exposure to damp and humid conditions. Common ailments during such weather include seasonal flu, skin rashes, and waterborne diseases.
“High humidity can cause dehydration without you realizing it, so it’s essential to drink enough fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty,” advised Dr. Anindita Ghosh, a physician at a central Kolkata clinic. She also recommended carrying umbrellas, wearing breathable fabrics, and avoiding street food that may be exposed to rainwater.
Farmers and Agricultural Benefits
In rural and peri-urban areas around Kolkata, the consistent monsoon showers have been welcomed by farmers cultivating paddy, jute, and vegetables. Timely rain has reduced dependency on groundwater for irrigation, ensuring healthier crop growth in this mid-monsoon phase. However, agricultural experts have warned about the risk of fungal infestations due to prolonged wet conditions.
Looking Ahead
Meteorologists are closely monitoring weather models to track any shift in the monsoon trough. While Kolkata is unlikely to experience extreme rainfall events in the immediate future, the possibility of localized heavy downpours remains high.
For now, residents are advised to keep rain gear handy, plan travel with possible delays in mind, and stay updated with official weather alerts. The combination of rain and humidity may persist until the monsoon trough shifts northward, likely later this month.
