Zomato has launched a new initiative, “Food Rescue,” aimed at reducing food waste by offering customers the chance to purchase cancelled orders at discounted prices. As per Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, over 4 lakh “perfectly good orders” are cancelled daily, contributing significantly to waste. The feature will notify nearby customers about cancelled orders, allowing them to buy the meals at a lower price in their original packaging. Orders will only be available for a limited time to ensure freshness.
This move is part of Zomato’s broader efforts to promote sustainability and help restaurants reduce food wastage. Zomato plans to expand its “Food Rescue” feature to all cities soon. Zomato clarifies that it will not profit from the initiative, apart from necessary government taxes. Goyal emphasized that the company, the restaurant industry, and even customers cancelling the orders aim to reduce the environmental impact of food waste.
This initiative arrives amid a probe by India’s Competition Commission (CCI) into Zomato’s business practices. The CCI is investigating allegations of unfair treatment and preferential policies for restaurant partners
