New Delhi — H.E. Mr. Johann Wadephul, Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, paid his first official visit to India as German Foreign Minister from 1 to 3 September 2025. During his visit, Minister Wadephul met Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and held delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. He also met Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal, reflecting the burgeoning economic partnership between India and Germany.
Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Reviewed
The discussions reviewed the multifaceted Strategic Partnership between India and Germany, covering trade and investment, defence and security, technology and innovation, green and sustainable development, education, and people-to-people ties. Both sides agreed to introduce gratis visas for short-term school and college visits to enhance educational exchanges.
Dialogue on Global and Regional Issues
The two foreign ministers exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Middle East situation, Indo-Pacific cooperation, and other global issues. Plans for a new bilateral consultation mechanism on the Indo-Pacific region were also discussed. India conveyed appreciation for Germany’s solidarity and support in combating terrorism.

The visit began in Bengaluru where Minister Wadephul engaged with German companies with significant Indian operations and visited key innovation hubs such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Key focus areas included green technology, digital transformation, AI, space cooperation, and sustainable urban development.
Celebrating 25 Years of Strategic Partnership
The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, built on mutual trust, democratic values, and a shared commitment to global stability and sustainable development.
