New Delhi: The First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy, comprising INS Tir, INS Shardul, INS Sujata, and Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi, has arrived at Maputo, Mozambique on 16 September 2025, marking a significant moment in India–Mozambique relations as the two nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic partnership.
A Milestone in Bilateral Relations
Led by Captain Tijo K Joseph, the squadron received a warm welcome by the Mozambique Navy and the Defence Advisor in Maputo. The visit underscores half a century of strong diplomatic, cultural, and defence relations between India and Mozambique, highlighting India’s vision of “MAHASAGAR – Bridges of Friendship Across the Ocean.”
Joint Training and Naval Exercises
The four-day engagement will feature joint training drills to enhance interoperability, including:

Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) training

Cross-training in navigation and communication

Diving operations

Firefighting and damage control training
Additionally, Indian Navy trainees will visit various Mozambique Defence Force units, deepening professional exchanges. The visit will culminate in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) and joint surveillance of Mozambique’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Strengthening Defence and Civic Ties
Beyond naval operations, the visit includes high-level interactions, with courtesy calls planned by the Senior Officer of 1TS along with Commanding Officers of the ships on the Chief of Mozambique Navy, the Mayor of Maputo, and the Indian High Commissioner. Socio-cultural engagements such as yoga sessions, medical camps, school visits, community outreach programmes, and friendly sports fixtures will further strengthen bonds between the two nations.

The First Training Squadron’s presence in Maputo reinforces India’s commitment to building maritime partnerships with African nations, fostering joint efforts for regional security, and strengthening people-to-people connections across the Indian Ocean Region.
