New Delhi: The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS), consisting of INS Tir, INS Shardul, INS Sujata, and ICGS Sarathi, concluded a strategic four-day port visit to Maputo, Mozambique from September 16–19, 2025. This deployment highlighted the enduring maritime partnership between India and Mozambique, focused on enhancing operational interoperability and fostering people-to-people connections.
Joint Naval Cooperation and Training
During the port call, the Indian Navy and Mozambique Navy participated in a suite of joint exercises, including diving operations, firefighting drills, Visit-Board-Search-Seizure (VBSS) operations, and integration of bridge machinery control. Indian Navy trainees visited Mozambique’s Marine Commando School at Katembe, Sargent School at Boane, and the Army Practising School at Manhica for cross-training. Mozambique Navy personnel embarked the 1TS ships for joint EEZ surveillance, further integrating operational procedures and strengthening cooperation.
High-Level Defence Engagements
Captain Tijo K Joseph, Senior Officer of 1TS, along with the commanding officers, held courtesy meetings with Mozambique Navy leadership and key defence officials, underscoring the expanding defence cooperation between the two countries. These high-level engagements reinforced the shared commitment to peace, security, and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
Community Outreach and Public Diplomacy
The Indian Navy’s visit also focused on social engagement. More than 1,000 school children toured the Indian ships, learning about naval operations and capabilities. Medical camps at Mozambique’s Naval Headquarters and a Maputo hospital provided healthcare to over 100 patients, with education on critical disease prevention, first aid, and emergency response. The deployment featured yoga sessions and friendly sports matches, underlining the people-to-people ties that complement defence cooperation.
Strengthening Maritime Partnerships
As the squadron sailed for Mombasa, the visit left a legacy of enhanced bilateral engagement and amplified India’s ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision—advancing peace, stability, and shared prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region. The port call marks another milestone in India’s growing maritime relations with African nations, based on mutual respect, training, and capability development.
