In a significant political shift, Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has led his National People’s Power (NPP) coalition to a resounding victory in the snap parliamentary elections held on November 14, 2024. The left-wing coalition, which was formed in the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s devastating economic crisis, has secured at least 159 seats in the 225-member parliament, clinching a majority well beyond two-thirds.
Dissanayake’s victory marks a sharp rejection of the traditional political establishment, with voters opting for his promise of anti-corruption measures and economic reform. His coalition, which includes civil society groups, students, and even Buddhist clergy, garnered 61.5% of the vote. In contrast, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa’s party could only muster a mere 17.6%. This triumph comes on the heels of his presidential win in September 2024, where he promised to tackle the rampant corruption and restore Sri Lanka’s economy after the country’s financial collapse in 2022.

For the first time since Sri Lanka’s independence, Dissanayake’s party won the most votes in the northern Tamil-dominated district of Jaffna, a historic achievement for the NPP. His decisive win has been seen as a clear mandate from the people to oust the entrenched political elite blamed for pushing the country into financial ruin.
Dissanayake expressed gratitude to his supporters, thanking them for enabling this “renaissance” in Sri Lanka’s political landscape. The overwhelming support reflects a nation’s desire for change and accountability after years of economic mismanagement.
With a decisive majority, Dissanayake’s NPP is now poised to implement its reform agenda and reshape Sri Lanka’s future, beginning with the establishment of a government that promises to focus on transparency and the recovery of stolen state assets.
