New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has formally signed a landmark contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 97 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A, comprising 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin seat trainers, along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The deal, valued at over Rs. 62,370 crore (excluding taxes), was concluded on September 25, 2025. Deliveries of these advanced aircraft are slated to begin in the fiscal year 2027-28 and complete over the subsequent six years.
Indigenous Content and Advanced Systems Integration
The LCA Mk1A variant boasts over 64% indigenous content and includes 67 additional locally developed components compared to its predecessor’s contract signed in January 2021. The aircraft is equipped with cutting-edge indigenous systems such as the UTTAM Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, the Swayam Raksha Kavach for electronic warfare, and advanced control surface actuators. These integrations strongly reinforce the Government’s ongoing Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) objectives within the defense manufacturing domain.
Boost to Domestic Aerospace Ecosystem and Employment
Supported by a robust vendor network comprising nearly 105 Indian companies producing detailed components, the production of the LCA Mk1A is expected to generate close to 11,750 direct and indirect jobs each year throughout its six-year production cycle. This substantial industrial activity will significantly enhance India’s aerospace ecosystem, fostering indigenous technological advancement and economic development.
Strategic Importance and Acquisition Category
The acquisition falls under the ‘Buy (India-IDDM)’ category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, which emphasizes indigenous design, development, and manufacturing. The LCA Mk1A represents the most advanced current variant of India’s indigenously designed and manufactured fighter aircraft range. It is poised to be a critical platform fulfilling the evolving operational requirements of the modern Indian Air Force.
Conclusion: MoU- MoD and HAL
This historic contract between MoD and HAL marks a pivotal advancement in India’s defense capabilities, showcasing a successful model of indigenous aerospace manufacturing and strategic military preparedness. The LCA Mk1A will play an essential role in securing India’s airspace with cutting-edge technology, aligned with the national vision of defense self-sufficiency and technological excellence.
