New Delhi: India has been re-elected to Part II of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized United Nations agency overseeing international civil aviation. The election took place on September 27, 2025, during ICAO’s 42nd Assembly session in Montreal. India secured more votes than in the previous 2022 election, underscoring growing confidence in India’s global aviation leadership and commitment to ICAO’s mission.
Significance of Re-election
Part II of the ICAO Council comprises States that make the largest contribution to international civil air navigation infrastructure. India has maintained an uninterrupted presence on the Council for 81 years since being a founding member in 1944. Its re-election affirms India’s pivotal role in advancing safe, secure, sustainable, harmonized, and gender-inclusive international aviation standards and policies.
Campaign and Diplomatic Outreach
Ahead of the assembly, the Ministry of Civil Aviation hosted a high-profile reception in New Delhi for ambassadors and high commissioners, seeking support for India’s candidature for the 2025–2028 term. The Ministry of External Affairs strengthened the campaign through continuous engagement with other member states. India’s representative at ICAO headquarters actively canvassed for votes.
