A powerful blast that ripped through a house in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya district late Thursday night left five people dead and several others injured, plunging the quiet locality into chaos and grief. The explosion, which caused the two-storey structure to collapse within seconds, has sparked an intensive investigation into the cause — suspected to be linked to explosive materials stored inside the residence.

The incident occurred in the early hours in the Begumpur locality under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station. Locals reported a deafening sound followed by tremors that shattered window panes and sent plumes of dust and debris into the night sky. As the house caved in, neighboring buildings also suffered cracks and damage, triggering panic among residents who rushed to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

Blast Turns Residential Area into Ground Zero

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying. “It felt like an earthquake. We ran out and saw that the house had completely collapsed. Screams were coming from inside,” said one local resident. Emergency teams from the police, fire department, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived swiftly and began pulling victims from the debris.

By early morning, five bodies had been recovered. The victims are believed to be members of the same family residing in the house. Two others, including a child, were rescued with severe burn injuries and rushed to the district hospital for treatment. Officials have yet to release the identities of the deceased pending family notification.

Preliminary investigations point toward the illegal storage of explosive substances as a possible cause of the blast. According to Ayodhya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raj Karan Nayyar, initial findings suggest that chemicals or firecrackers were being stored inside the house.

“We have reason to believe that the explosion was not accidental. Samples from the debris have been collected and sent for forensic analysis. The intensity of the blast indicates that a substantial quantity of explosive material was present,” the SSP said.

Local residents told police that one of the occupants had recently started dealing in firecrackers and chemicals for festive sales ahead of Diwali. Authorities are now verifying these claims. A case has been registered, and teams are tracing possible supply chains linked to the stored materials.

Rescue, Relief and Accountability

District Magistrate Nitish Kumar visited the site early Friday morning to supervise rescue and relief operations. He announced compensation for the families of the deceased and assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of negligence or illegal activity. “We will not tolerate the storage of hazardous materials in residential areas. A special drive will be launched to identify such cases across the district,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the injured victims are being treated at Ayodhya District Hospital, where doctors described their condition as critical but stable. Psychological support is also being arranged for surviving family members and affected neighbours.
