Dr. Jitendra Singh Inaugurates 10th Annual “Cell and Gene Therapy” Symposium at CMC, Vellore, Celebrates India’s Gene Therapy Breakthrough

Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the 10th Annual “Cell and Gene Therapy” Symposium at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, organized by the Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR) and backed by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The Minister praised the team at CSCR for completing India’s first-in-human gene therapy trial for Hemophilia A, marking a historic scientific and medical milestone.​

Landmark Gene Therapy for Hemophilia A

CSCR’s pioneering trial used a lentiviral vector approach, broadening patient eligibility over the conventional AAV method. Trial results demonstrated sustained clotting Factor VIII expression and prevented bleeding episodes, making the therapy a transformative leap towards accessible, affordable gene therapy in India and comparable low- and middle-income settings. The trial also sets a foundation for future clinical phases, commercial technology transfer, and the creation of a GMP-compliant iPSC haplobank with global alliances.



Expanding Access to Mental Healthcare

Dr. Jitendra Singh also inaugurated a new 42-bed Medium-Cost Private Ward in CMC’s Department of Psychiatry. The new ward bridges affordability and excellence, modernizing facilities and extending high-quality, subsidized care to all sections of society.

India’s Rise in Global Biotechnology

Placing these advancements in national context, the Minister highlighted India’s ascent as a global biotechnology powerhouse. Key points included:

  • India ranks 3rd in Asia-Pacific and 12th globally in biomanufacturing.

  • The bioeconomy has grown from $10 billion in 2014 to nearly $170 billion today, with a target of $300 billion by 2030.

  • Pharma exports have surged to nearly $30 billion annually.

  • Over 11,000 biotech startups now operate in India, up from just 50 in 2014.​
    India’s innovation ecosystem has expanded under policies like BioE3, the public–private BIRAC model, National Research Foundation co-funding, and escalated R&D investment, with a sharp rise in patents filed by Indian residents.

National and Global Leadership

DBT-driven breakthroughs such as the world’s first DNA vaccine for COVID, the HPV vaccine, and development of the Nephetrovacine antibiotic highlight India’s growing global influence in biotechnology research and public health.
