Haryana – The Haryana IPS death case involving Y Puran Kumar took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when police booked the deceased officer’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, along with three others for abetment of suicide. The charges stem from the death of assistant sub-inspector Sandeep Lathar, who was found dead with a gunshot wound and left behind accusations of corruption against the late IPS officer.
FIR Registered Against Four in Haryana IPS Death Case
Police in Haryana’s Rohtak district registered an FIR against Amneet P Kumar, her brother and Punjab legislator Amit Rattan, exemptee ASI Sushil Kumar, and another policeman named Sunil, who is posted at the IG office in Rohtak. The charges in the Haryana IPS death case include abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“An FIR has been registered against senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, her brother and Amit Rattan as well as exemptee ASI Sushil Kumar and another policeman Sunil, posted at IG office in Rohtak, on charges of abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy under relevant sections of BNS,” a senior police officer from Rohtak confirmed, requesting anonymity.
The FIR was filed under sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of BNS, marking a significant development in the escalating Haryana IPS death controversy.
Chief Minister Meets ASI’s Family
The development in the Haryana IPS death case came on the same day that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met the family members of 41-year-old Lathar and assured them of “appropriate action.” Chief Minister Saini’s OSD Virender Singh Badhkhalsa informed the deceased ASI’s family members during the meeting about the FIR being registered against four persons and urged them to give consent for the autopsy.
Sanjay Deswal, Lathar’s cousin, confirmed that the body has been sent to Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, and the post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted on Thursday morning. The last rites were planned to be performed at Lathar’s native village Julana in Jind at 12 noon on Thursday.
Family’s Demands Accepted
Deswal stated that the government accepted their demands related to the Haryana IPS death case, including registration of an FIR, a government job for Sandeep’s wife as per her qualification, and last rites with full state honor. Administrative officials assured the family of a fair probe in a time-bound manner, addressing their concerns about justice in the complex Haryana IPS death matter.
Details of ASI Sandeep Lathar’s Death
ASI Sandeep Lathar, who was posted in the cyber cell in Rohtak, allegedly shot himself dead at his village on Tuesday evening. He left behind a purported final note that leveled corruption allegations against late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who had also served in the same district. This suicide note became a crucial element linking the two deaths in the Haryana IPS death investigation.
The 41-year-old ASI’s death came just days after the suicide of the IPS officer he accused, creating a complex web of allegations and counter-investigations in the Haryana IPS death case.

The post-mortem examination, which began at 11:45 am and concluded at 1:22 pm, was carried out by a medical board comprising four experts—a convener, two doctors from the department of forensic medicine, and a specialist from histopathology. This thorough examination was part of efforts to establish facts in the controversial Haryana IPS death case.
Amneet’s Statement and Assurances
In an earlier statement regarding the Haryana IPS death case, Amneet P Kumar said she had given consent for the autopsy after receiving assurance from Chandigarh Police that a fair probe would be conducted. She also cited a commitment from the Haryana government that action would be taken against “erring officers.”
Later in the day, Y Puran Kumar’s last rites were conducted at the Sector 25 crematorium in Chandigarh, where a guard of honor was presented by a police contingent, acknowledging his service despite the controversy surrounding his death.
