The violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has claimed the lives of four people, with the death toll rising on Monday morning. The unrest erupted during a court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid on Sunday, following a claim that the mosque was built on the site of a demolished Hindu temple. Tensions peaked as mobs clashed with police, leading to stone pelting and vehicle fires.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the state government’s handling of the situation, accusing the BJP of inciting the violence and deepening communal rifts. He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, asserting that the BJP’s actions had escalated the unrest. “The administration’s hasty actions without hearing all parties contributed to the loss of lives,” Gandhi stated on X (formerly Twitter). He also called for Supreme Court intervention to ensure justice.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav echoed similar concerns, alleging that the BJP, alongside the state government, had orchestrated the violence.
In response, the district administration imposed Section 144, prohibiting outsiders from entering the area until November 30. The situation remains tense, though the police have maintained a presence in key locations. Police sources confirmed that at least 24 law enforcement officers were injured in the clashes. A total of four FIRs have been registered, and 21 people have been detained, including two women.
The police report stated that shots were fired by miscreants during the clashes, leading to multiple injuries among the police. As investigations continue, the state remains on high alert as officials seek to prevent further unrest.
