The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier R&D centre under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, and the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-GN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Gandhinagar. This collaboration aims to promote cutting-edge research, innovation, and development of indigenous telecom and cybersecurity products.
Objectives and Mandate of the Centre of Excellence
The CoE will synergize C-DOT’s technological expertise with IIT Gandhinagar’s academic excellence to accelerate India’s leadership in telecommunications and technology. Its focus areas will include mobile communications, cybersecurity, quantum communication, advanced artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced telecom applications.
The Centre will enable IIT-GN students, faculty, and researchers to collaborate with C-DOT experts to address real-world telecom and ICT challenges using emerging technologies. It also aims to foster a robust innovation ecosystem by supporting incubation, mentoring startups, and facilitating industry-academia partnerships. Training, capacity building, and skilling efforts will align with national priorities like telecom, semiconductors, and digital transformation missions, preparing an industry-ready workforce.
Key Remarks from Leadership
Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, emphasized that the CoE will create a vibrant collaborative environment, advancing next-generation telecom innovations and intellectual property development. He highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat, envisioning a self-reliant India contributing to global technological progress through indigenous innovation.
Prof. Rajat Moona, Director of IIT-GN, underscored the significance of self-reliance in digital and communication technologies, including cybersecurity, for India’s security and development. He described the MoU as a crucial step toward indigenous capability building and innovation, fostering new ideas with emerging niche technologies.
