The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDI), a Mini-Ratna company, celebrated the 51st Foundation Day of Coal India Limited (CIL) and the 51st Foundation Day of CMPDI on November 20, 2025, at its Ranchi headquarters with great enthusiasm and commitment to future growth. The event underscored CMPDI’s pivotal role in India’s energy landscape and emphasized the need for innovation and strategic diversification to meet emerging challenges.
Minister of State for Defence Highlights CMPDI’s R&D Contributions
Shri Sanjay Seth, Minister of State for Defence, Government of India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he acknowledged the extraordinary milestone of completing 50 years for both CMPDI and Coal India. He highlighted that high-quality research and development (R&D) along with continuous innovation have been key factors in CMPDI’s achievements and its dedicated service in fulfilling India’s energy requirements. Shri Seth further reiterated CMPDI’s significant role in advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and the target of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2070.
Industry Leaders Advocate for Technological Adaptation and Diversification
Special Guest of Honour Shri N. C. Jha, Former Chairman of Coal India Limited, praised CMPDI’s contributions while urging the organization to capitalize on Information Technology and broaden its service portfolio to sustain relevance in the evolving mining sector. He specifically called for strengthening CMPDI’s Business Development department to exploit new opportunities emerging in the mining industry.
Former CMD of CMPDI, Shri Manoj Kumar, emphasized the need for CMPDI to align closely with national priorities, particularly in meeting India’s Net-Zero goals and addressing growing energy demands. He assured that CMPDI is prepared to seize future prospects through strategic alignment with the nation’s vision.
CMPDI CMD Advocates Expansion Beyond Coal
Shri Satish Jha, CMD (Additional Charge) of CMPDI and CMD of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), highlighted major accomplishments over the past year and pointed to the urgency of diversifying CMPDI’s focus beyond coal mining. He advocated a strategic transition into critical and rare earth elements (REEs), clean energy solutions, and adoption of advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and smart mining practices to boost productivity and operational efficiency. He framed this transition as essential for CMPDI’s sustainable leadership and innovation in future decades.
Recognition of Excellence
During the event, Shri Sanjay Seth and other dignitaries presented corporate awards to various departments and regional institutes of CMPDI in recognition of their exemplary performance in the fiscal year 2024-25. The ceremony was attended by prominent personalities including Shri Nilendu Kumar Singh (CMD, Central Coalfields Limited), Shri Shankar Nagachari, Shri Rajiv Kumar Sinha, Shri Nripendra Nath, Dr. Kamakshi Raman (Executive Director, IICM), former CMDs, directors, general managers, and other key representatives from CMPDI and CIL.
