New Zealand has unveiled its squad for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship series against England, featuring the return of star batter Kane Williamson and the debut Test call-up of all-rounder Nathan Smith. The first Test begins on November 28 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
Williamson’s comeback after a groin injury provides a significant boost to the team. He missed the recent 3-0 whitewash against India but is now set to strengthen the batting lineup. Meanwhile, Nathan Smith, a promising 26-year-old all-rounder, has been rewarded for his stellar domestic performances, including being the leading wicket-taker in the last Plunket Shield season.

Veteran pacer Tim Southee, who recently announced his retirement plans from Test cricket, will play his final series unless New Zealand secures a spot in the WTC final. The squad, led by Tom Latham, is geared for a pace-heavy strategy, excluding spinners Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi despite their solid recent performances. Mitchell Santner will join the team for the second and third Tests.
The series holds dual significance: it is part of New Zealand’s campaign to qualify for the WTC final and a farewell to Southee, one of the country’s greatest bowlers. New Zealand selector Sam Wells emphasized the emotional and competitive stakes, saying, “It’s a big series for the team and a fitting occasion to honor Tim’s illustrious career.”
The three-Test series schedule is as follows:
- 1st Test: November 28 – December 2, Christchurch
- 2nd Test: December 6 – 10, Wellington
- 3rd Test: December 14 – 18, Hamilton
The squad includes Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Matt Henry, and Jacob Duffy, among others. This series will test the Kiwis’ depth and resolve against a formidable England side.
