Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has strongly condemned what it describes as state-sponsored violence against its supporters during a rally in Islamabad on November 26, 2024. PTI leaders allege that security forces engaged in a brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrators, firing live rounds and using snipers in an effort to disperse the crowds.
The protest, which aimed to demand the release of Imran Khan, turned deadly when clashes broke out at D-Chowk in Islamabad. According to PTI, the violence resulted in the deaths of two party supporters, while several others were injured. The party has labeled the actions of the government as a “massacre” and denounced the military and police for using excessive force against unarmed protesters. PTI further criticized the government’s handling of the situation, calling it an act of “fascism” under the “brutal military regime” led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In contrast, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi responded by condemning the violent actions of PTI protestors, which led to the deaths of at least four security personnel. The government is seeking to hold those responsible for the assault on law enforcement accountable while also stressing the need for medical care for the injured officers. PTI has urged the international community to condemn what it calls the erosion of democracy in Pakistan.
The political unrest highlights the growing tension between Imran Khan’s PTI and the ruling government, amid ongoing calls for Khan’s release from prison. Despite government-imposed restrictions and security lockdowns, the PTI remains defiant in its protests, calling for the restoration of democracy and justice for their leader.
