Maharashtra – Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has found himself at the center of a major political controversy after making highly objectionable remarks during campaigning for the Malegaon Nagar Panchayat elections. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has issued a strong condemnation of Ajit Pawar’s statements, which party spokesperson Mahesh Tapase characterized as an explicit threat against the democratic rights of the people. The controversy erupted when Ajit Pawar, who holds the state’s Finance portfolio, made statements that directly linked development funding to electoral outcomes.
During his campaign speech, Ajit Pawar shockingly declared to voters that they “have votes, I have funds.” He proceeded to warn that if voters did not back the NCP candidates and “rejected” them, then he would also “reject” development in return. “Let us be absolutely clear: Ajit Dada Pawar is merely the custodian of the public exchequer, not its owner. These funds are given from the taxes paid by the common people,” Tapase asserted. He emphasized that public funds must be used for the all-around development of the state and all its citizens, irrespective of whether Ajit Pawar’s chosen candidates win or lose an election.
Tapase further argued that explicitly linking development aid to electoral success constitutes a corrupt practice and represents a gross misuse of the power entrusted to Ajit Pawar as Finance Minister.
