Parliament Winter Session: Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Uproar Over Adani, Manipur, and Sambhal Issues

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 13 adjournment notices filed under Rule 267.

New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament faced disruptions yet again as Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned amid protests from opposition members demanding discussions on pressing issues. These included allegations of bribery involving the Adani Group, the communal clashes in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, and ongoing violence in Manipur.

Shortly after the session began, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 13 adjournment notices filed under Rule 267. These notices called for the suspension of scheduled business to address urgent matters. Despite Dhankhar’s appeal for constructive discussions, opposition members, led by the Congress, persisted with their demands, prompting an adjournment for the day.

The opposition, particularly the INDIA alliance bloc, is pressing for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into allegations against the Adani Group, recently highlighted by U.S. legal filings claiming the group bribed officials to secure contracts. Gautam Adani and his firm have categorically denied the charges, labeling them baseless and unsupported by evidence.

Adding to the turmoil, issues like violent clashes in Sambhal, linked to a mosque survey, and the humanitarian crisis in Manipur have intensified opposition protests. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge argued that the government’s reluctance to address these issues tarnishes India’s global image.

Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the opposition of stalling legislative proceedings for political motives. The government is pushing forward its legislative agenda, including the introduction of bills related to amendments in the Waqf Act and financial reforms.

The stalemate reflects growing tensions between the ruling coalition and the opposition, with both sides trading barbs over accountability and governance.
