As Maharashtra prepares for its new government, speculation surrounds Eknath Shinde’s role. Will he accept the deputy chief ministerial post or move to the central cabinet? Shiv Sena leaders remain divided, with clarity expected soon.
Shinde Awaits Leadership Decision
Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reiterated his commitment to following the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “I have conveyed to PM Modi and Amit Shah that I will support any decision they make regarding Maharashtra’s leadership,” Shinde stated after recent discussions in Delhi.
Shiv Sena’s Stance on the Deputy CM Role
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat hinted at internal dynamics, suggesting that if Shinde declines the deputy CM role, the position will likely go to another Sena leader. “The decision lies with Shinde. If he opts out, someone else from our party will step up,” Shirsat told reporters.
Shamburaj Desai, a senior Shiv Sena leader and former minister, emphasized Shinde’s value to the alliance. “Given his administrative expertise and stronghold in Thane, Shinde’s inclusion in the new government is crucial. Party members and workers strongly back him,” Desai remarked.
Power-Sharing Talks in Progress
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance achieved a decisive victory in the recent elections, securing 230 of 288 seats. Key leaders, including Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar, recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda to finalize the power-sharing structure.
While BJP favors Fadnavis for the CM role, Shiv Sena leaders advocate for Shinde’s inclusion, either as deputy CM or in a pivotal central role.
Announcement Imminent
Speaking after the meeting, Shinde said, “We will finalize the leadership decision soon. Discussions are ongoing, and an announcement is expected in the coming days.”
As Maharashtra watches keenly, Shinde’s decision will shape the next chapter for the Mahayuti government.
