Jharkhand mourns the loss of Mangal Munda, descendant of tribal icon Birsa Munda.

Breaking News

Ranchi, Jharkhand: Mangal Munda, the 45-year-old great-grandson of revered tribal leader Birsa Munda, succumbed to his injuries early Friday at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. He had been hospitalized following a tragic road accident in Jharkhand’s Khunti district on November 25, which caused severe brain injuries.

Munda was critically injured when he fell from the roof of a passenger vehicle, suffering extensive head trauma and blood clots in the brain. Despite undergoing surgery led by Dr. Anand Prakash, Head of Neurosurgery at RIMS, Munda could not be saved and was declared dead at 12:30 a.m. on November 29 due to cardiovascular failure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Munda’s death an irreparable loss for the tribal community. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, along with Governor Santosh Gangwar, also extended their sympathies to the bereaved family. “May Marang Buru grant peace to the departed soul,” Soren shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident has drawn criticism from leaders, including former Chief Minister Arjun Munda, who questioned the state’s healthcare system. He alleged that Munda’s delayed treatment at RIMS highlighted systemic issues and called for reforms to prevent such tragedies.

The final rites of Mangal Munda are expected to take place in Ulihatu, his ancestral village and the birthplace of Birsa Munda. The state government has assured full support to the family.

Birsa Munda, born in 1875, led a significant tribal resistance against British colonial rule and is honored as ‘Dharti Aaba’ (Father of Earth). His legacy remains central to Jharkhand’s identity, with the state’s foundation day celebrated on his birth anniversary, November 15.
