NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited a delegation from the Indian National Congress (INC) to meet on December 3, 2024, in response to the party’s concerns regarding the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Congress raised serious questions about voter turnout discrepancies, alleging that the electoral process had been compromised. Among the concerns was a sudden rise in voter turnout figures, which the party claims to be irregular and potentially manipulated.
The Congress party’s grievances focus on a significant jump in voter turnout, particularly after the polling stations were officially closed. In some constituencies, voter participation surged from 58.22% at 5 PM to 65.02% by the evening, leading the party to demand a detailed investigation. Congress also flagged issues with the accuracy of voter roll data, citing unusual discrepancies between early and final turnout figures.
In response, the Election Commission has assured the Congress delegation of a transparent and thorough review of their concerns. The Commission reiterated that all polling data is available for verification at each constituency level, and attributed the late-night turnout updates to procedural duties of polling officers. The ECI has also assured the Congress that after hearing their concerns in person, a detailed written response would follow.
The meeting between the Election Commission and Congress on December 3 will play a pivotal role in addressing these concerns and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in future elections.
