Born on February 15, 1910, in Senguttai Palayam near Pollachi in Coimbatore district, Subramaniam had a long public career that spanned several decades. He served as Union Minister for Agriculture, Finance, and Defence, and later held the position of Governor of Maharashtra. He also represented people both in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and in Parliament.
As a freedom fighter, Subramaniam actively participated in the Quit India Movement and was imprisoned in 1942 for opposing British rule. His life reflected a deep commitment to national service, from the freedom struggle to post-independence governance.
In recognition of his immense contribution to the country, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1998, India’s highest civilian honour. His work continues to influence agricultural policy and rural development even today.
