Government and Opposition Near Agreement to End Parliament Deadlock, Discussions Set for Constitution

The deadlock in Parliament’s winter session may soon be resolved, with the government and opposition parties nearing an agreement. A key development involves the setting of dates for discussions on the Constitution, marking its 75th year since adoption. According to reports, these discussions will take place in the Lok Sabha on December 13 and 14, and in the Rajya Sabha on December 16 and 17.

In addition to the constitutional debate, the Samajwadi Party and TMC are expected to raise other issues like the Sambhal violence and developments in Bangladesh in the Lok Sabha.

While the opposition demands an official announcement of these dates before resuming regular parliamentary proceedings, sources suggest that there is optimism for the resumption of work in Parliament from Tuesday following positive discussions.

However, the opposition’s push for a dedicated debate on the Adani issue seems unlikely to be granted. The Congress has been vocal about the indictment of Adani Group chairperson Gautam Adani and other company officials over charges of bribery and fraud, but there is little chance of this matter being discussed in isolation. It may be raised as part of broader debates.

The Adani controversy, along with ongoing protests over incidents like the violence in Sambhal and the unrest in Manipur, have led to repeated adjournments since the session began on November 25. Despite these disruptions, some opposition parties, particularly the TMC, have focused less on the Adani row and are prioritizing other national issues, such as unemployment and rising prices.
