New Delhi – The Lok Sabha witnessed a brief walkout by the opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, in protest against the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The unrest, which escalated during a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, has left six dead and dozens injured. Tensions ignited over a court-ordered investigation into claims that the mosque was built on a historic Hindu temple site.
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, addressing the issue in Parliament, criticized the government for its handling of the situation, alleging the violence was pre-planned. “People lost their lives due to police mishandling, and false cases are being filed against innocent individuals,” Yadav said, calling for accountability. He highlighted that key figures, including SP MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, were named in the FIR despite their absence during the clashes.
The violence erupted on Sunday when a crowd protested the survey, clashing with security personnel, torching vehicles, and pelting stones. Authorities have registered seven FIRs and arrested 25 individuals, while 2,750 unidentified persons remain accused. Police maintain that only tear gas and rubber bullets were used to manage the mob, while some fatalities resulted from rioters firing homemade pistols.
The district remains under heavy police surveillance with internet services suspended and public entry restricted until November 30. Deputy Inspector General Muniraj G confirmed that the situation is under control and assured that innocent individuals would not be penalized. Markets and schools in the district are gradually reopening.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Sambhal today to meet with affected families and assess the situation.
