NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, with major changes as 13 sitting MLAs have been dropped. This move marks AAP’s strategic reshuffle ahead of the polls, the dates for which are yet to be officially announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In a notable shift, two prominent leaders — Manish Sisodia from Patparganj and Rakhi Birla from Mangolpuri — will contest from new constituencies. Alongside them, AAP has now officially dropped 13 sitting MLAs to refresh leadership and strengthen its position for the 2025 elections. With this latest announcement, the party has dropped a total of 16 sitting legislators.
The dropped MLAs include Sharad Chauhan (Narela), Dilip Pandey (Timarpur), Pawan Kumar Sharma (Adarsh Nagar), Dharampal Lakra (Mundka), and Ram Niwas Goel (Shahdara), among others. This strategic shift highlights AAP’s focus on consolidating leadership and projecting a new vision to voters ahead of the Assembly’s term end in February 2025.
Notably, Shahdara MLA Ram Niwas Goel and Timarpur MLA Dilip Pandey have opted out of contesting the upcoming polls, signaling a shift in leadership priorities.
AAP had previously dropped three MLAs in its first candidate announcement in November, aligning with its vision of revamping leadership by introducing fresh faces. These adjustments are seen as a move to counter opposition strategies and maintain political dominance ahead of the 2025 polls.
AAP’s 2020 win with 62 of the 70 Assembly seats, while BJP managed just 8, underlines the stakes as the party prepares for yet another electoral battle. With these strategic shifts, AAP continues to maintain its focus on governance reforms and public welfare schemes to strengthen its campaign.
