Mumbai: The bustling Kurla West area turned into a scene of devastation late Monday night as a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus lost control, causing a major accident. The crash resulted in six fatalities and left 49 people injured, including pedestrians and motorists.
The incident occurred around 9:50 PM when the electric bus, reportedly due to a brake failure, collided with multiple vehicles and individuals along its path before crashing into a residential complex’s gates. Eyewitnesses described the bus traveling at high speed, swerving uncontrollably for nearly 200 meters before halting.
The bus, part of a fleet leased from EVEY Trans, had been operational for only three months. Investigations by the Mumbai Police are underway to determine if mechanical issues or driver error caused the crash. CCTV footage from the area is being examined for further insights.
Local residents and first responders played a critical role in rescuing the injured and transporting them to nearby hospitals. Municipal authorities have assured stricter oversight of public transport safety to prevent such tragedies in the future.
