NEW DELHI: As Delhi heads towards its 2024 Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal made a significant announcement aimed at benefiting the city’s auto drivers. On Tuesday, Kejriwal revealed that the Delhi government would provide a Rs 10 lakh insurance coverage for auto drivers, ensuring their safety and financial security.

Kejriwal shared the announcement during a visit to the Kondli constituency, where he had lunch with the family of an auto driver. In addition to the insurance scheme, he pledged further financial assistance to auto drivers, offering Rs 1 lakh to help with the marriage expenses of their daughters.

Recognizing the need to support auto drivers in their daily lives, Kejriwal also promised a uniform allowance of Rs 2,500 to be provided twice a year. He highlighted the importance of education for their children, stating that the Delhi government would provide free coaching for auto drivers’ children, enabling them to pursue quality education and better opportunities.

Additionally, Kejriwal announced the relaunch of the ‘PoochO’ app, which connects passengers with registered auto drivers in the city. The app, developed by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), will make it easier for passengers to book rides directly by calling up registered drivers via their mobile numbers, enhancing the convenience and reliability of auto travel in Delhi.

The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for February 2024, will see the AAP fighting to retain power for a third consecutive term. With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress as major competitors, Kejriwal’s announcements are expected to strengthen his party’s appeal among Delhi’s auto drivers, a key constituency in the city’s political landscape.
