Manipur police are investigating the discovery of two hand grenades at separate locations, including outside an ICICI Bank branch and at Kangla Foods. Authorities suspect the devices may be linked to extortion activities.
The first grenade was found on Wednesday morning near the ICICI Bank branch at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai in Imphal West, spotted by joggers. The explosive device, missing its lever, was promptly handled by the bomb disposal squad, who safely recovered it by 10 am. The police suspect it could be connected to extortion but have not yet identified the perpetrators or their motives. An official investigation has been launched.
In a separate incident, another grenade was discovered at Kangla Foods in Nambol, Bishnupur district. This device came with a threatening note, warning the manager to contact the listed phone number within 24 hours or face consequences. Like the first, the grenade was safely neutralized and taken into custody.
These incidents have heightened concerns over extortion activities in the region, prompting the Manipur government to implement stricter precautions to ensure public safety. Investigations are ongoing to determine the identity of those responsible and their intentions.
