Apple is set to elevate the capabilities of its upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3 by introducing a “texts via satellite” feature, making it the first mainstream smartwatch to integrate satellite technology. According to a report, the feature will allow users to send text messages even when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection available, with satellite services provided by Globalstar Inc., a US telecommunications company.
This new development would make the Apple Watch Ultra 3 the first of its kind to offer such functionality, following in the footsteps of Apple’s previous satellite-enabled devices. The iPhone 14, released in 2022, was the first Apple device to feature satellite communication, initially allowing users to contact emergency services in areas without cellular coverage. Over time, Apple expanded the technology to enable roadside assistance communication and, more recently, the ability to send iMessages.
Apple and Globalstar have strengthened their collaboration over the years. In November, Apple invested $1.5 billion in Globalstar, acquiring a 20% stake in the company. Following the Bloomberg report on the new feature, Globalstar’s stock price surged by 15%, while Apple’s shares saw a modest increase.
In addition to the satellite feature, there are reports suggesting that Apple is also working on a blood pressure monitoring function for the Apple Watch. Initially expected for a 2023 release, this feature is now slated for next year, targeting health-conscious consumers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering real-time monitoring of high blood pressure.
