New Delhi: The opposition parties, led by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and supported by DMK and Left party MPs, intensified their protest in Parliament on December 12, 2024, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the ongoing Adani issue.
Carrying placards that collectively spelt out “desh bikne nahin denge” (we won’t let the country be sold off), the protestors expressed concerns over alleged collusion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani. The slogans echoed their demand for transparency and accountability over the controversies surrounding the Adani Group.
The protest unfolded near Makar Dwar and Samvidhan Sadan as opposition leaders reiterated their call for an independent investigation into Adani’s business dealings, especially following his recent indictment in a U.S. court. This marks the latest in a series of daily demonstrations from the Congress and its allies during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
On Wednesday, opposition leaders engaged in symbolic protests, presenting BJP leaders with tricolour cards and red roses to urge constructive dialogue and address the Adani matter within the parliamentary framework. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered a symbolic gesture to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, reinforcing their stance.
The protests have included innovative symbolic gestures, including Congress MPs carrying dark blue ‘jholas’ (bags) printed with caricatures of both Modi and Adani, along with the phrase “Modi-Adani Bhai-Bhai” to underline their claims of alleged complicity.
The Congress continues to maintain that Adani’s legal troubles in the U.S. strengthen their demand for a comprehensive parliamentary investigation into the industrialist’s alleged involvement in financial irregularities. Rahul Gandhi has gone so far as to call for Adani’s arrest to ensure justice and transparency.
Despite these demands, the Adani Group has repeatedly dismissed all allegations as baseless. However, the protests signal a growing political rift as the opposition presses for accountability and systemic reforms.
The Winter Session remains fraught with political tension, and it remains to be seen whether a formal JPC will be constituted to investigate the allegations. Opposition parties appear unwavering in their demand, setting the stage for continued parliamentary disruptions.
