RBI Headquarters Receives Bomb Threat Email; Police Investigate

Governor Malhotra, who recently took over from Shaktikanta Das, inherits an institution that has faced similar threats in the past. In December 2023, the RBI received multiple hoax emails claiming bombs had been planted in various locations within the bank. In a separate incident in November 2024, a call from an individual claiming to be the CEO of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba threatened to shut down the bank. While these threats were determined to be false, they prompted heightened security measures and extensive searches for suspicious objects at the RBI headquarters.

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has received a bomb threat via email, prompting an immediate investigation by the police. The message, written in Russian, was directed at RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra’s email address, warning of an explosive attack on the bank’s head office in Mumbai.

A police officer confirmed that the MRA Marg police had registered an offense based on a complaint from the RBI’s security office. The email, allegedly sent by an unknown individual, contained a threat to blow up the RBI using explosives.
