Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on Friday garnered strong praise, especially from her brother and Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka, representing Wayanad, made her debut address with a powerful message centered on national unity, women’s empowerment, and the safeguarding of India’s Constitution.

When asked about her speech, Rahul Gandhi expressed admiration, stating, “Wonderful speech. Better than my maiden speech, let’s put it like that.” Rahul, who entered Parliament for the first time in 2004, took pride in his sister’s eloquent debut.

In her speech, Priyanka Gandhi referred to the Constitution as a “Suraksha Kavach” (protective shield), criticizing the ruling government for its attempts to weaken this shield over the past decade. During a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, she highlighted the importance of the Constitution in safeguarding justice and unity while accusing the government of undermining its integrity through various policies.

Priyanka also weighed in on the ongoing caste census debate, calling it an urgent need while accusing the government of trivializing it with distractions. She emphasized, “Today, people of the country are demanding that there be a Caste Census,” noting that it was crucial for creating informed policies.

Additionally, the Wayanad MP took a firm stance against the government’s push for privatisation and lateral entry, arguing that these moves are attempts to weaken reservation policies. She also raised concerns about the socio-political challenges faced by marginalized communities, referring to a meeting with the victims of Sambhal violence, who aspired for a better future through education.
