Tulsi Gowda, the revered environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away at the age of 86 at her home in Karnataka. Tulsi Gowda, born in Honnali village in Karnataka’s Ankola Taluk and a member of the indigenous Halakki tribe, was known for her extraordinary contributions to environmental preservation. Throughout her 60 years of service to nature, Gowda planted more than 30,000 saplings, significantly contributing to the restoration of forests in her region. Her unwavering commitment to preserving the environment led to her being honored with the Padma Shri in 2021, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.
The passing of Tulsi Gowda has deeply saddened many, with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla both offering heartfelt tributes to her legacy. Gowda’s work will continue to inspire environmental conservation efforts for generations to come.
