Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 13-year career. The 38-year-old made the announcement shortly after India drew the 3rd Test against Australia in Brisbane, marking the conclusion of his illustrious career. With 537 wickets in Test cricket, Ashwin now stands only behind the legendary Anil Kumble, who holds the record with 619 wickets.
Ashwin expressed his gratitude during India’s post-match press conference, acknowledging the support he received from teammates like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane, who played key roles in his success. He also thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the coaches who guided him throughout his journey. “Even though I have a bit of punch left, I want to explore club-level cricket,” Ashwin said, reflecting on his decision to retire.
The announcement had been speculated for days, especially after an emotional moment on Day 5 of the Test, when Ashwin was seen sharing a heartfelt hug with Virat Kohli. Sunil Gavaskar also hinted at Ashwin’s retirement during a live broadcast, which soon turned out to be true.
Throughout his career, Ashwin played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is for India, taking a total of 765 wickets across all formats. His Test record is especially outstanding, with an average of 24 and a strike rate of 50.7, including 37 five-wicket hauls. Ashwin’s accomplishments in Tests have earned him recognition as one of the best off-spinners the game has seen. He holds the record for the most wickets by an off-spinner in Test cricket and is the seventh-highest wicket-taker in the format.
Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and quickly rose to prominence with his performances for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, Ashwin nurtured his talent and became a key figure in India’s bowling attack.. Ashwin was also part of India’s victorious 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy campaigns.
In addition to his bowling exploits, Ashwin also contributed with the bat, scoring six centuries and 10 half-centuries in Tests. His resilience was evident in iconic moments, such as when he batted with a back injury alongside Hanuma Vihari to help India salvage a draw in the 2021 Sydney Test.
Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. However, Chennai Super Kings will bring him back in action for IPL 2025 after buying him in the recent mega-auction.
