Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey on Friday filed a privilege motion against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of sharing a “criminally edited” video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with the intent to manipulate public sentiment and tarnish the reputation of Parliament and the country.
In his motion, Dubey criticized Gandhi for crossing the limits of responsible behavior expected from the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He claimed that by sharing the video, Gandhi had committed a breach of parliamentary privileges and contempt of the House. Dubey called for Gandhi’s immediate suspension from both the Parliament and its committees and requested a thorough investigation by the Committee of Privileges.
Dubey alleged that Gandhi had quoted parliamentary proceedings out of context to mislead the public and lower the dignity of the institution. He urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to investigate the matter and take appropriate action, including suspending Gandhi until the investigation was concluded.
This motion follows a similar move made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who filed a privilege motion against Amit Shah on Thursday, accusing him of contempt of the House.
In response to the privilege motion against Gandhi, Congress MP Hibi Eden questioned the status of previous privilege motions filed against BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra. Eden, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, suggested that CCTV footage would reveal the truth and refute the BJP’s allegations against Gandhi.
Eden also defended Rahul Gandhi’s actions, emphasizing that as the Leader of Opposition, he had the constitutional right to attend Parliament sessions.
