The ongoing tension between the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated on Thursday, with BJP leaders accusing Rahul Gandhi of engaging in an “act of vandalism” in Parliament. Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Shivraj Singh Chouhan condemned the actions of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, calling his behavior “indecent and shameful” and demanding that the Congress leader face statutory action for assaulting two BJP MPs.
The controversy began when members of both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) were protesting simultaneously over the legacy of BR Ambedkar. The situation turned chaotic when the two sides came into direct confrontation. According to the BJP, Gandhi shoved their MPs, Farrukhabad’s Mukesh Rajput and Balasore’s Pratap Chandra Sarangi, while making his way into the Parliament building, causing injuries.
Gandhi, however, denied these accusations, claiming that BJP MPs were blocking the entry of opposition members and pushing them. He also alleged that Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was injured during the scuffle.
Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed outrage over Gandhi’s conduct. Goyal stated that the Leader of Opposition had no right to hold such a position given his “shameful” actions. Chouhan went further, accusing Gandhi of deliberately violating security instructions and moving toward BJP MPs. He questioned whether Gandhi’s conduct was in line with “Indian culture” and whether it represented the behavior expected from a parliamentarian.
The BJP leaders highlighted the severity of the injuries suffered by their colleagues, with Sarangi reportedly requiring an MRI and Rajput losing consciousness. They also accused Gandhi of showing no remorse or concern for Sarangi’s condition. Goyal criticized Gandhi for not offering an apology or ensuring medical help was provided to Sarangi.
Adding fuel to the fire, Chouhan cited complaints from BJP MP B Phangnon Konyak, who alleged that Gandhi’s behavior made her uncomfortable. He claimed that Konyak, visibly upset, had approached Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, further fueling the BJP’s call for strict legal action against Gandhi.
Chouhan and Goyal continue to insist that the authorities handle the situation through legal means to ensure accountability, as the BJP’s demand for a thorough investigation into the incident grows. As the allegations unfold, the controversy remains a major flashpoint in the ongoing political tussle between the Congress and BJP.
