NEW DELHI: In the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 2025, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its offensive against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). On December 23, senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur unveiled an ‘Aarop Patra’ (chargesheet) accusing AAP national convener and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of transforming Delhi into a “corruption lab” through a series of alleged scams.
The chargesheet highlights several points of contention, including:
- Mismanagement of Pollution: The BJP criticized the AAP government’s handling of air quality and the Yamuna River’s pollution levels, suggesting that inadequate measures have exacerbated environmental issues in the capital.
- Alleged Corruption Scandals: The document enumerates various alleged scams under the AAP administration, though specific details were not disclosed during the announcement.
Anurag Thakur, during the press conference, stated, “The AAP government has failed to deliver on its promises and has instead indulged in corrupt practices, turning Delhi into a corruption lab.”
In response, Arvind Kejriwal defended his government’s track record, emphasizing improvements in electricity, water supply, and the introduction of new schemes aimed at women’s welfare. He dismissed the BJP’s chargesheet as a political maneuver ahead of the elections.
The Aam Aadmi Party is seeking a third consecutive term in the upcoming elections. In the 2020 elections, AAP secured a significant majority by winning 62 out of 70 seats.
As the election date approaches, both parties are ramping up their campaigns. The BJP has shortlisted 2-3 candidates for each constituency and is expected to announce its first list of candidates soon. Meanwhile, AAP has already released multiple lists of candidates, with Arvind Kejriwal set to contest from the New Delhi constituency.
The political climate in Delhi is heating up, with both major parties engaging in strategic offensives to sway voters. The forthcoming elections are poised to be a critical juncture for Delhi’s governance and development trajectory.
