The Supreme Court has recently granted bail to a man from Punjab, accused of rape and allegedly using connections with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to intimidate the complainant. The man’s legal team argued that the accusations were fabricated, claiming that the complainant had filed a false case under the influence of a senior Punjab Police officer.
As part of his bail petition, the accused presented WhatsApp chats and call records between the complainant and a senior superintendent-level officer of Punjab Police. According to the petition, the accused was in a live-in relationship with the woman, who later began a relationship with the police officer. The accused’s lawyer, RK Grewal, argued that the officer had used his position to falsely implicate the man in a rape and threat case, driven by jealousy over the woman’s past relationship.
“There is no evidence to suggest that my client threatened the woman using Lawrence Bishnoi’s name. She fabricated the story under the officer’s influence,” Grewal told The Indian Express. He further explained that the motive behind the false allegations was clear from the WhatsApp chats and video recordings, which indicated that the officer was unable to tolerate the woman’s relationship with the accused.
This case adds to the growing controversy surrounding Lawrence Bishnoi’s name, following a separate incident earlier this month where Mumbai Police registered a non-cognisable offence against an unidentified man who allegedly threatened an ambulance operator using Bishnoi’s name. The man had reportedly threatened to shoot the operator over an affair involving a woman.
