WASHINGTON: Sajeeb Wazed, son of ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has accused the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus of weaponizing the judiciary to conduct a political witch hunt against the Awami League leadership.
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Wazed condemned the government’s actions following its formal request to India for his mother’s extradition. He described the tribunal’s proceedings as politically motivated and lacking legitimacy.
Sheikh Hasina, 77, fled to India on August 5 after student-led protests ended her 15-year rule. Since her departure, multiple charges, including crimes against humanity, have been filed against her and over 40 associates. The International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka has issued arrest warrants, intensifying the political crisis.
The interim government, established to restore stability, has faced criticism for its approach. Wazed, residing in Washington, D.C., labeled the government’s actions as a “witch hunt” and emphasized the need for fair judicial processes. He also highlighted ongoing violence against Awami League members, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to democratic principles.
The diplomatic request for Hasina’s extradition has placed India in a delicate position, given its historical support for the Awami League. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has acknowledged receiving the request but has refrained from commenting further, stating that Hasina is in India for safety reasons.
As the situation unfolds, international observers urge the interim government to ensure due process and uphold human rights. Human Rights Watch has called for fair trials and reconsideration of capital punishment in related cases before proceeding with extradition requests.
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains volatile, with the interim government’s actions under scrutiny. The international community continues to monitor developments, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes and the rule of law.
