Tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla and Manali, have transformed into snowy landscapes, delighting visitors with a picturesque white Christmas. Similarly, parts of Jammu and Kashmir have received fresh snowfall, with temperatures plunging several degrees below freezing, enhancing the festive atmosphere for holidaymakers.
In Himachal Pradesh, the recent snowfall has led to the closure of over 200 roads, including key national highways such as the Attari-Leh route. This disruption has caused significant traffic issues, particularly in Manali, where approximately 1,000 vehicles were stranded near the Atal Tunnel. Authorities successfully rescued around 700 tourists from the area.
Tragically, four fatalities have been reported due to vehicle skidding incidents on the icy roads. The Public Works Department has deployed 268 machines, including snow blowers, to clear the blocked roads and restore connectivity. Tourists are advised to adhere to local advisories and avoid driving in snowy conditions to ensure safety.
The influx of tourists seeking a snowy holiday has led to a surge in hotel bookings, with occupancy rates in Shimla exceeding 70%. The snowfall has contributed to a 30% increase in room reservations, indicating the region’s popularity during the festive season.
In Jammu and Kashmir, higher elevations have received fresh snowfall, with temperatures dropping significantly. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg reported lows of minus 7.8 and minus 7.4 degrees Celsius, respectively. The Meteorological Department has forecasted continued cold conditions, with light snowfall expected in higher reaches in the coming days.
The region is currently experiencing ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day period of intense cold that commenced on December 21. This phase is traditionally associated with the harshest winter conditions in Kashmir, often leading to the freezing of water bodies and water supply lines.
While the snowfall has enhanced the scenic beauty of these regions, attracting numerous tourists, it has also posed challenges in terms of transportation and safety. Authorities are working diligently to manage the situation, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the winter wonderland while minimizing risks associated with severe weather conditions.
