Manu Bhaker, a distinguished Indian shooter and double bronze medallist from the Paris Olympics, has addressed the recent controversy surrounding her exclusion from the Khel Ratna award nominations. In a statement, Bhaker acknowledged a potential oversight in her nomination process and emphasized her commitment to representing India, irrespective of awards.

The initial list of nominees for the prestigious Khel Ratna award did not feature Bhaker’s name, leading to public outcry and criticism directed at the sports ministry and the selection committee. Bhaker’s coach, Jaspal Rana, and her father, Ramkishan Bhaker, expressed their disappointment over the omission, especially given her significant achievements at the Paris Olympics.

In response to the situation, Bhaker stated, “With regards to the ongoing issue for my nomination for the most prestigious Khel Ratna award, I would like to state that as an athlete, my role is to play and perform for my country. I believe there has been a lapse, maybe on my part while filing for the nomination, which is being corrected.”

She further emphasized that while awards and recognition are motivating, they are not her ultimate goal. “Irrespective of the award, I shall remain motivated to win more medals for my country. It is a request to everyone, please do not speculate on this matter,” Bhaker added.

Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics by securing bronze medals in both the 10m air pistol individual event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. Her achievements have been widely celebrated, making her exclusion from the initial nomination list particularly surprising to many in the sports community.

The sports ministry has indicated that the nomination process is still ongoing and that the initial list is not final. There is a possibility that Bhaker’s name may be added to the final list after a thorough review. An official from the ministry stated, “This is not the final list; there is a process involved.”

As the situation develops, Bhaker remains focused on her training and future competitions, reiterating her dedication to bringing more accolades to the nation.
