MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray has commenced a comprehensive evaluation of his party’s position in Mumbai, focusing on the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections anticipated in early 2025. This strategic move follows the party’s underwhelming performance in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, where the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, of which Shiv Sena (UBT) is a constituent, secured only 46 out of 288 seats. In Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) contested 21 of the 36 assembly seats, winning 10.
To bolster the party’s prospects in the forthcoming BMC elections, Thackeray has scheduled a series of meetings from December 26 to 29, 2024. These sessions aim to review reports submitted by party observers and engage with local leaders across various Mumbai constituencies. The discussions will cover areas including Borivali, Dahisar, Andheri, Bandra, Mulund, Vikhroli, and South Mumbai.
In light of the recent electoral setbacks, there is speculation that Shiv Sena (UBT) may consider contesting the BMC elections independently, potentially severing ties with the Congress party. Party leaders, including Sanjay Raut, have indicated that the organization is contemplating a solo run in the upcoming civic polls.
The BMC, India’s wealthiest municipal corporation, has been under the administration of an appointed body since 2022, following the end of its five-year term. The upcoming elections are crucial for Shiv Sena (UBT) to reassert its influence in Mumbai’s political landscape.
As the party prepares for these pivotal elections, the focus remains on strengthening its organizational structure, addressing internal challenges, and formulating strategies to effectively engage with Mumbai’s electorate.
